2014 SUMMER PROGRAM: AT HOME IN THE ARTS

Gateway's summer program is based on Practical Life Activities as well as Art.

Practical Life activities allow for the continuity of the basics practiced during our academic school year which promote small motor control, refinement of movement, care of the environment, care of self and most importantly, the skill of concentration which is the basis for all learning.

Learning art skills and creating works of art allow the child's creative spirit to express itself while at the same time developing his manual dexterity and problem-solving skills.

"The child needs activity concentrated on some task that requires movement of the hands guided by the intellect."
-Maria Montessori

Once concentration has begun, the child will find many interesting things to occupy his time and will repeat the activity to perfect his skills. After all, grace comes from doing well what we've done so many times before.

Learning to scribble, draw and paint is really a matter of concentrating on seeing what the world has to offer. Pablo Picasso said that "every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

All children between 2 and 6 years of age are invited to join us for a fun-filled and relaxed summer.
